Man’s Life was published by crestwood publishing from 1953-1971.  Originally a Men’s action and adventure story magazine, Man’s Life ran the gammut of pulp fiction ultimately devolving and mirroring american culture through the 1970′s with some of the funniest off the wall sex stories.  There was core anchor to Man’s Life through out the 1950′s and 1960′s, Awesome Pulp illustrations including the infamous “Weasels ripped my flesh” cover by Will Hulsey that inspired Frank Zappa’s Album and cover of the same name.

Man’s Life Magazine January , 1954

This Classic issue of Man’s Life includes an illustration entitled “Arctic Manhunt” for a 5 page photo story of General Umberto Nobile’s doomed conquest of the North pole. (the cover is a wonderful illustration of Umberto Nobile by Illustrator John Fay).  Also included in this issue is a story on Canal Street “Never the world over was there a bawdier, lustier spot than these two blocks in Buffalo, NY.  A  4 page photo story called Salute to the cow pony about Californias Los Alamitos track and the quarter horses that race there.  A story on the Indian Massacre of 1953 about the motilone wariors of south america and their attack on an oil camp in columbia.  The story of the Altmark, a Nazi prisoner ship entitled Nazi hell ship – about the true account of the capture of the Fraf Spee and the horific months of improsonment in an ichy norwegian fjord untill their rescue by British marines.  For true crime fans their is the story of “the bloody reign of john ashley, for 10 years the ashley gang terrorized Florida killing cops, and robbing over 40 banks.   How to win at poker is an excellent early poker article by ely Culberson that includes a full page poker odds graph which is possibly one of the first statistical and mathematical look at using statistics in order to win at poker.  A historical look at Football’s top thrill in 1954, the SMU and Notre Dame matchups including  7 pages of photos and history dating back to 1939.
