The Etude

The Etude had a long and distinguished publishing run from 1887 – 1957.   With its Long-time editor -in-chief Francis Cooke from 1909 through 1949, the Etude added the phrase “Music Exalts Life!”,    Though it embraced the modern technologies of Radio & Television along with Jazz and other modern music it went as far as a primarily sheet music publication could.   Though you can read opinions that state it lost readership due to a highly optimistic and conservative editorial view (imagine that) Could it not be their awful cover art and drab portraits during the 1940’s which may have had a bigger hand in their eventual retirement.    Yet we are fortunate to have dozens of highly collectible Covers from the 1920’s through the mid 1930’s  ranging from Art Deco to Nouveau.
